beautiful!
This is just horrid, and defeat the purpose!! but as always, sex sells #fail
Deareast Abir,
“Feminism” is not always rejecting the sexy side of a woman (just as men have their’s)..The cause is not black or white..
Fashionbeirut deals with fashion which is a medium of beauty, and I think that’s nice..fashion and all other fields can exploit people(including NGOs), but fashion and all other fields can also be beneficial, supportive or simply beautiful..
let’s just stop attacking everything all the time..
Dear Abir,
The photos were approved by the Lebanese women who started this campaign. There is nothing “sex”, sexy, nor sexist about them. We are a fashion agency (not a regular advertising agency or production company): we do fashion and beauty photos. The outcome would have been the same had our team chosen to feature actual men in the shoots.
Our purpose as FashionBeirut, when we team up with social causes, is to show that fashion can be useful and ethical and can make a change – without having to alter itself and make compromises when it comes to the fashionable and beautiful aspect of our editorials.
We were not paid by anyone to make these photos, not by the activists, not by the stores, and every single person who worked on these shots did it pro bono. We are not trying to sell you anything.
We do understand that fashion can be intimidating to some people, or that it can make you quite nervous; but this does not in any way mean that our industry – and certainly not this agency – is run by stupid people; and we, as much as the actual activists who started and run this campaign, and the thousands of supporters we have – do not believe that these photos defeat the purpose at all.
We do however appreciate and respect everyone’s opinion, and everyone’s thoughts are always welcome to be approved on our website.
Best regards,
FashionBeirut team
Right cause, beautiful photos : good job!
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not sure I get the relationship between the campaign and the shoot, aside from the facial hair.
I think something more powerful could’ve been conceived that captures more of the spirit of the campaign, while still being in the fashion realm.
Maybe someone could take the time to explain what the shoot’s getting at..
Cheers
Dear Fadi,
The campaign was about getting women to dress as men – get rid of their gender status of women – in order to reclaim their full citizenship. The approach, as you can guess, is ironic: no one is in no way reinforcing the gender labeling nor are they trying to say that women should turn into men. The approach is merely a satyrical one on how the citizen rights in Lebanon are distributed to people differently depending on their genders.
The civil movement was done by having numerous Lebanese women wear facial hair and dressing as “men” in order to illustrate the irony of their position.
The photo shoot that FashionBeirut.com worked on followed the same principle: dress the models as men, add facial hair when possible (the president is not allowed to have facial hair), and push the statement a bit further by featuring women in positions that are reserved to men in the Lebanese society. The fields we picked were the political (the President), the social (the construction worker), and the security (the policeman).
Thank you for taking time to take a look and write a comment
Best,
FashionBeirut team
